By pulling the string at the bottom, one figure folds backwards and the other figure appears. The black head and clown head both made of composition, hand-painted and modelled. Fabric original, trimmed with Dresdner paper, which has deteriorated a little.

A VERY RARE SEDITIOUS FIGURE OF A LADY
French, circa 1820.
A lathe-turned ebony wooden stick. When lit it casts a shadow on the wall. The image mostly turns out to be a silhouetted profile of a political personality. The history of the ‘Seditious’ figures dates back to the 17th Century. In this case it is a nude woman. Quite seditious at the time… What’s also rare she can be seen full-length. Note the typical hairstyle of the early 19th Century. One small piece broken off; it doesn’t have any influence on the shadows.
