A very pronounced, sculpted papier-mâché head, black glass eyes, silk costume and silk covered stick. Small piece of Dresdner paper near the hat is missing, as are two little metal bells.

A PAPIER-MÂCHÉ DOLL MERCHANT NODDER
Thuringia, mid 19th Century
Standing upon a wooden base a paper-mache figure of a man with loosely- nodding head, painted costume of blue polka-dot pants, yellow vest, big red bow tie, brown cap and purple Tyrolean-style jacket. A paper mache doll sits on his shoulders, he offers a bounty of dolls in one of his hands (one set of them is missing) and there are further dolls stuffed into his vest and jacket pockets. Some wear.

A RARE ORIGINAL BESTELMEIER CATALOGUE
Nuremberg, n.d. circa 1810, Quarter-4to (20.5 × 24.5 cm)
A richly Illustrated mail-order catalogue by Georg Hieronymus Bestelmeier (1764-1829), a Nuremberg-based manufacturer and merchant. Every item in his ‘magazine’ is engraved in copper and described in detail. This Bestelmeier magazine lists a total of 1350 items in text and 1303 images. The catalogue showcases the enormous range of products from Nuremberg’s toy and other manufacturing industry and offers a unique insight into the entire world of toys at that time. With 82 (instead of 84?) copper plates. Traces of use, pages with creases, foxing throughout.

A SET OF NINE SMALL SAILOR SKITTLES
French, circa 1890
Consisting of sailors in 1860's British naval uniforms. papier-mâché painted and modelled bodies standing on a wooden base. The sailors consist of four in blue hat and white shirt and four in blue hat, blue jacket and the captain in blue jacket, white shirt, blue trousers, a peaked cap and a red tie. A few chips.

A HUMPTY DUMPTY CIRCUS CHINAMAN ACROBAT
Schoenhut, USA, circa 1910
A two-part head in which a composition-type face is glued to the lathe-turned head. Painted features, a black wooly hair queue, white cloth trousers and a yellow felt trimmed blue cloth jacket. Tight-rope slots on the bottoms of the black wooden feet. Included are his original props, a bottle, a spinning dish and stick and an umbrella (damaged). Excellent condition.

A SWIVELING EMBRACING COUPLE
Thuringia, circa 1850
Painted papier-mâché woman in blue crinoline skirt with lace trim, her blonde hair held in a red headdress, the head bent backwards, as a bearded man leans over her crinoline to embrace and kissing her passionately on the lips, spinning on a pivot on a composition base. Two dents to skirt, cracked around waist and slight general wear. See "Early Toys 2", Leipold/Bickert/Kreher, 2024 - page 164, fig 1 for this actual model.

By pulling the string at the bottom, one figure folds backwards and
the other figure appears. The black head and clown head both made
of composition, hand-painted and modelled. Fabric original, trimmed with Dresdner paper, which has deteriorated a little.

A VERY RARE SEDITIOUS FIGURE OF A LADY
French, circa 1820.
A lathe-turned ebony wooden stick. When lit it casts a shadow on the wall. The image mostly turns out to be a silhouetted profile of a political personality. The history of the ‘Seditious’ figures dates back to the 17th Century. In this case it is a nude woman. Quite seditious at the time… What’s also rare she can be seen full-length. Note the typical hairstyle of the early 19th Century. One small piece broken off; it doesn’t have any influence on the shadows.
